Rolex Signature
The grooved bezel is a distinctive Rolex signature. Originally, the grooves in the Oyster bezel had a functional purpose: screwing the bezel onto the case helped ensure the water resistance of the watch.
It is therefore identical to the grooves on the caseback, which are also screwed onto the case using a specific Rolex tool to achieve water resistance. Over time, the grooves became an aesthetic element, a true Rolex signature. Today, the gold grooved bezel of this Datejust 41 is a distinctive signature.

A watchmaking technique
Many of the dials in the Oyster Perpetual collection feature a sunray finish that creates a delicate reflection of light. It is created using a sophisticated brushing technique that creates a groove extending outwards from the centre of the dial.
The light is diffused consistently along each engraving, creating a characteristic subtle glow that moves depending on the position of the wrist. Once the sunray finish is complete, the dial is coloured by physical vapour deposition or electroplating. A thin layer of varnish gives the dial its final look.
